Uncut Sheets of 1965 Topps Football Cards

The diagrams below show how several sections of an uncut sheet of 1965 Topps football cards were configured. I believe that each full 1965 Topps sheet contained a complete set of 176 cards, plus 22 repeats--or double prints--for a total of 198 cards. The popular price guides say that there are 132 double prints in the set, but I believe that the price guides are incorrect.

In the figures below, if you hold your cursor above a card, your browser should show you the number of the card and the name of the player. Clicking on a card will bring up the full-sized scan. (A real uncut sheet would not have black lines between the cards--that is an effect of scanning them individually.)

First Half-Sheet

The 198-card full sheet was divided into two half-sheets, each containing 9 rows of 11 cards. This diagram shows the configuration of one half-sheet; it is modeled after a picture of a real half-sheet that a reader sent me. If you collect the 1965 Topps set, you will notice that the cards along the bottom are some of the toughest cards to find in high grades.

This table shows how the cards on the first half sheet were numbered. The first and eighth rows, marked in green, are identical, so the cards in these rows are double prints.

Second Half-Sheet

This picture shows some pieces of the second half of the full sheet. Most of the large piece is modeled after a partial sheet pictured in an old Mastro Auctions catalog. I got the smaller pieces by looking at badly miscut cards. As I find more miscut cards, these pieces of the second half sheet will begin to fit together. If you find a miscut card that you think will help, please email me a picture of it.

This is how the pieces of the second half were numbered. I have seen one miscut Matt Snell card, number 127, with Larry Eisenhauer below it, and another Matt Snell card with Ed Budde below it, so the row containing Matt Snell in it evidently appeared twice on this half sheet. That row is colored green below. I have also seen a Daryle Lamonica card, number 36, with Pat Shea below it, and another Lamonica card with Clem Daniels below it, so Lamonica is evidently also a double print. I believe Lamonica will appear on the left end of each of the two green rows on this sheet.
