Today’s card of the day is a 1958 Topps card of Jim Doran. This is one of my favorite images on a football card–with his beat-up helmet, does Doran look like a warrior, or what?
Doran played end for eleven seasons in the NFL: 1951 to 1959 with the Detroit Lions, and 1960 to 1961 with the expansion Dallas Cowboys. He played in four NFL Championship games with the Lions, all against the Cleveland Browns. The Lions won three of those games, in 1952, 1953, and 1957.
Dallas acquired Doran in the 1960 NFL Expansion Draft. He scored the first touchdown in Cowboys history, on a 75-yard pass play from Eddie LeBaron. At the end of the 1960 season, he became the first Cowboy to be chosen for the Pro Bowl.
Doran appeared on several other cards, as well–though none as impressive as this one. You can see all of Jim Doran’s cards in the Gallery.
