Jim Ninowski, who played quarterback in the NFL for twelve seasons, passed away on July 23. He was 88 years old. As a player, Ninowski moved a lot: he played for the Cleveland Browns in 1958 and 1959, the Detroit Lions in 1960 and 1961, the Browns again from 1962 to 1966, the Washington Redskins in 1967 and 1968, and the New Orleans Saints in 1969. His most productive year was 1960, when he threw for 1921 yards and seven touchdowns for the Lions. He played on one playoff team, the 1958 Browns.
Ninowski played college football at Michigan State.
Today’s card of the day is Ninowski’s 1959 Kahn’s Wieners card. It is one of 31 cards in the set, all Cleveland Browns and Pittsburgh Steelers. (Kahn’s was based in Cincinnati in 1959, and Cleveland and Pittsburgh were the closest NFL cities.) Ninowski appeared on a few other football cards, as well.
Another really nice set design that I had previously been completely unaware of.
