Charley Johnson, who played quarterback for fifteen seasons in the NFL, passed away on September 3. He was 85. Johnson played from 1961 to 1969 for the St. Louis Cardinals, from 1970 to 1971 for the Houston Oilers, and from 1972 to 1975 for the Denver Broncos. Sadly, he never played in a playoff game.
Johnson made the Pro Bowl in 1963, and in 1964 he led the NFL with 223 completions and 3045 passing yards. He was added to the Broncos Ring of Fame in 1986.
Before his pro career, Johnson starred at New Mexico State University.
Today’s card of the day is Johnson’s rookie card, a 1963 Topps. Topps spelled his name “Charlie” instead of “Charley” on the card–and did it again in 1971, 1973, and 1974. I’m not sure whether to call that an error or not. He appeared on many more cards, as well.
