Today’s card of the day is Jim Marshall’s rookie card, a 1963 Topps. Marshall played defensive end professionally for 21 years: in 1959 for the CFL’s Saskatchewan Roughriders, in 1960 for the Cleveland Browns, and from 1961 to 1979 for the Minnesota Vikings. He still holds the NFL record for consecutive games played for one team, 270 for the Vikings.
Marshall was selected for the Pro Bowl in 1968 and 1969, and he played in Super Bowls IV, VII, VIII, and X. He was inducted into the Vikings Ring of Honor in 1999, and the team retired his jersey number, 70, the same year. (See the Gallery’s page of retired numbers for all NFL teams.)
Marshall was a finalist for the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2004, but he wasn’t elected. Not surprisingly, he appeared on a lot of football cards over his long career. You can see all of Marshall’s cards in the Gallery.
