1942 Redskins Matchbooks
1942 Redskins Matchbooks were printed by the Maryland Match Corporation of Baltimore and distributed by Home Laundry Cleaners of Washington, D.C. There are twenty matchbooks in all, including three Hall-of-Famers: coaches Ray Flaherty and Turk Edwards, and quarterback Sammy Baugh.
Each matchbook has a picture of a player (or coach) on the inside of the cover, along the player's position and college and a facsimile autograph. The outsides of the matchbooks are all alike; they include advertising for Home Laundry and the team's 1942 home schedule.
By my count, only five of the players in the set ever appeared on a regular issue football card. That's mainly because no card company produced a set between the 1935 National Chicle and 1948 Bowman and Leaf offerings.
The Redskins won the NFL Championship in 1942, going 10-1 for the season and beating the Chicago Bears 14-6 in the title game. Their only loss was to the New York Giants, in the second game on the matchbook cover.
