1979 Stanford Playing Cards
The 54-card deck of 1979 Stanford Playing Cards contains 11 player cards, 11 cards of coaches and athletic directors, 1 card of Stanford Stadium, and a whopping 31 text cards of Stanford football records, schedules, poll results, bowl appearances, etc. More players would have been nice--John Elway was a freshman on the team, wouldn't that have been cool?--but the people who produced the decks apparently thought we'd rather read stuff.
Remarkably, four of the coaches in the deck eventually became head coaches in the NFL. The most successful was George Seifert, who led the San Francisco 49ers to two Super Bowl wins.
Also remarkably, 9 of the 11 players in the deck went on to play in the NFL, and 6 of them had pro careers of 7 or more years. Darrin Nelson played the longest, 11 years with the Minnesota Vikings and San Diego Chargers.
The 1979 Stanford cards can be found with two different backs: white on a red background and red on a white background. I have seen them in a single-deck box and a two-deck box with a snazzy felt cover.
